Silent Supersonic Technology Demonstration Program (Revised Edition)

Beyond the Sky and into Space JAXA 2011 - 2012


JAXA provided a lot of interesting topics in fiscal year 2011 including Astronaut Furukawa's expedition to the International Space Station, setting up the Upgrade Project for the mainstay launch vehicle, and the development of the Global Change Observation Mission 1st – Water “SHIZUKU.” We would like to introduce JAXA's activities between April 2011 and March 2012 covering all of our five primary fields namely space science, space application by satellites, ISS and manned space development, launch vehicles and space transportation systems, and aviation technology and research. Project managers of the Lunar Explorer "KAGUYA" (SELENE) and the ultra high-speed Internet satellite "KIZUNA" (WINDS), which were launched successfully on H-IIA Launch Vehicles No. 13 and No. 14, respectively, explain about their operation achievements to date and future prospects.
Anticipated research results from observations by the Solar Physics Satellite "HINODE" (SOLAR-B) are introduced here through images, as are scenes from the assembly of the "Experiment Logistics Module Pressurized Section" (ELM-PS), the first assembly task of the Japanese Experiment Module "Kibo" performed by Astronaut Takao Doi. Future launch plans and advanced research and development in the aviation field are also shown.
